''Magistellus Totem'' review by Sven Heil.

Ein schönes Artwork ist das erste, womit der Musiker hinter Nubiferous mal wieder den Hörer lockt. Lockt, in eine mystische Welt, voller Geheimnisse und beschwingter Rituale, wo sich die fünf Stücke in notwendiger Ruhe entfalten können, um so viel Raum für Atmosphäre zu lassen. Gerade zu Beginn ist der rituelle Aspekt der dominierende, eben auch ganz in der Tradition von Nubiferous, aber es geht auch düsterer. Durch Nebelschwaden erklingt eine Stimme ("Glossolalia"), weit entfernt, und doch scheinbar zum Greifen nah, und so schnell wie jene auftaucht, ist sie auch wieder entschwunden. Dunkle Schwaden ziehen im Gemüt auf, denn mit dem finsteren "940 (Geopathogenic Abyssum)" geht es hinab in die Gefilde des Dark Ambient- eine starke Komposition, die sich wie ein unaufhaltsames Gift in den Körper schleicht. Auch "Lightning Nest" ist nicht unbedingt als freundlich zu werten, denn auch hier ist das Fundament in ambienter Kälte gekleidet. Ich muss dabei gestehen, dass mir die schummerigen Kompositionen in dieser Angelegenheit am meisten zusagen, da mich jene atmosphärisch einfach stärker ansprechen. Aber auch die dezente Akzentuierung beim Titelstück und dem folgenden "Dowsing (The Ley Hunter)" hat natürlich ihren Reiz, womit letztendlich gesagt werden kann, dass Nubiferous' "Magistellum Totem" eine recht innige Sache geworden ist, die mit ihrer Aura Gedanken kreisen lässt und für wohlige Nächte sorgen dürfte. "Magistellus Totem" ist eine recht düstere Angelegenheit geworden, wobei streng genommen der ambiente Anteil die Basis bildet, was sich bereits frühzeitig manifestiert. Eine ausgewogene Balance ist somit eines der Merkmale, mit dem man ohne Probleme seine Hörer finden wird. Also jetzt mal Butter bei die Fische: Für einsame Waldgänge durchaus empfehlenswert, so kommt das Werk gerade unter Ohrmuscheln sehr gut zur Geltung, und wer mit dem Projekt schon immer auf einer Ebene stand, der muss sich auch diese Publikation zulegen. https://www.raben-report.de/2020/06/10/nubiferous-magistellus-totem/

NUBIFEROUS – Deflected Feral Tapes - review by Sven

Was früher vielmehr im Ambient geschwängerten Gewand gekleidet war und sich im weiteren Verlauf seines Bestehens zu einem rituell anmutenden, und vor allem auch eigenständigen, Projekt entwickelte, ist das meinerseits hoch gelobte Nubiferous Projekt aus Pyatigorsk, Russland. Mittlerweile nun auch schon zehn Jahre existent, so hat man sich für das vorliegende Tondokument etwas Besonderes einfallen lassen. "Deflected Feral Tapes" ist streng genommen kein neues Lebenszeichen, aber für Freunde von Nubiferous trotzdem unverzichtbar, bekommt man doch Stoff von diversen Compilations geboten, wie auch neu aufgenommenes und unveröffentlichtes Material. Bereits das Artwork versprüht da seinen Reiz, wo man zu einer Reise geladen wird, die ganz in der Tradition des Projektes gehalten wird. Wie immer ist schnell ein Bezug zur Natur gefunden, ebenso der rituelle Aspekt, welcher unter anderem durch den tribalartig gehaltenen Rhythmus seine Verkörperung findet. Der Trip beginnt recht ruhig, etwas, was eigentlich auch immer die Basis im Schaffen von Nubiferous betrifft- einatmen und träumen. Was sich dann mit "Ectoplasm Emanations" schon anbahnt, findet seine perfekte Umsetzung im folgenden "The Hinderers". Großartig! So muss diese Art von Musik klingen, wo man schlagartig gefangen ist und unsterbliches Kopfkino die eigenen Visionen beflügelt. Wer meint, dies gäbe es nicht, der sollte sich unbedingt mal auf genannten Song stürzen, wirklich ganz großes Kino! Aufgrund der musikalisch angenehmen Atmosphäre sind im übrigen sämtliche Publikationen des Projektes zu jeder Zeit konsumierbar, auch wenn längere Stücke mitunter einer kleinen Anlaufzeit bedürfen.Fazit: Wem Nubiferous bislang kein Begriff ist, der sollte "Xvarenah" probieren, wo sämtliche Facetten vorbildlich aufgezeigt werden. Nubiferous ''Jol'' album review by The Lizard in Black [ESOTERIC AMBIENCE]

There’s some black magic in these woods, huh? Nubiferous has been the master throughout their entire career of creating ritualistic, dark and coniferous soundscapes that warp the listener into a faraway wooded land, where mysterious rituals and magic lurks. It’s been a couple years since I last checked in on him, and I got to say, this is the darkest album I’ve heard from him yet.

Whereas his earlier work could maybe be mistaken for forest whimsy at some parts, Jol is a look into darker, perhaps even evil rituals that go on when no one is watching in the woods. Describing an ambient album as “meditative” is as obvious as it gets normally, but rather here I would like to use the word “transfixed”. There’s something memorizing about the flutes and esoteric synths, this truly feels like a very focused adventure into another world. The biggest problem I have is not that I don’t like what there is, but that I want so much more. The 28 minute run time just doesn’t give me enough time to enough time to fully appreciate the soundscapes, particular since there are only two tracks that are 10 minutes long. This felt like the perfect time for a 4 track, 10 minute apiece 4 part album to lay down 4 different scenes, but as is feels like basically half a story. I want to know so much more about the world Nubiferous puts forth, but  all I get are parts to a great story and some anecdotes.

It’s unfortunate, but despite feeling incomplete, the music that is here is great, even if perhaps the two meaty tracks can feel a bit similar at times. Jol is a different album than I was expecting but I like the direction all the same, and just wish it was further fleshed out as a whole.

Review by Psymon Marshall : Sol Mortuus & Nubiferous - Sorni-Ekva

Sorni-Evka is a split album released by Novosibirsk’s Black Mara label, and features two of Russia’s exponents of texturally complex and viscerally emotional dark ambient and ritual folk, Sol Mortuus (The Dead Sun) and Nubiferous respectively, with each project contributing four tracks. Only traditional ethnic instruments are employed here – gusli (a type of harp), traditional harp, kalyuka (an overtone flute), tambourine, bells, and percussive instruments. At its heart lies the legend of the Golden Woman (Золотая баба, zolotaya baba) of the Siberian shamanic tradition and, as such, propels us into a primordial world in both time and location, and places us at the intersection between the two realms (the earthly and the supernatural). I think it would be accurate to say that shamanism was amongst mankind’s first exercises in attempting to contact and commune with the denizens of the ‘other’ realm which many believed existed alongside ours. To this end Sol Mortuus’ opener ‘Marija Tump’ hits the primitive consciousness centres, resonating with a deeply felt vibration that more than hints at the existence of this parallel world. And this is achieved with no more than something akin to a jaw harp, flute, percussion, and a deep male voice. It reaches back into the past and pulls it into the present. And this aspect is Sol Mortuus’ presiding genius, the ability to infuse a sense of the origins of our attitudes and approaches to spirituality, and of the methods created to mediate communication between the material and the numinous. It’s earthy, celestial, chaotic, ordered, resonant, primal, spiritual, necessary, and immediate, bypassing the modern mind to head straight to the ancestral memory buried deeply within. I’ve talked about reconnections before in other reviews, and it’s as true of this one as it was of the other music I was describing. Nubiferous is a different beast altogether, resonating and radiating from an even deeper, darker region. If Sol Mortuus delineates the ritual aspects themselves, the Nubiferous contributions describe leaving this realm and entering into and travelling through the transitional interfaces, and finally on into the sphere of the extramundane that overlays the prosaic. Shamanism as a practise entails its own dangers, and the other realm contains its own monsters and hostile entities with which the practitioner has to deal. Here deep, stomach-stirring bass rumbles vie with indecipherable breathings and mutterings, crescendos of grainy noise reminiscent of throat-singing, shimmering singing bowls, and percussive punctuations. This music is not just of the shaman himself, but of the very land upon which he stands – the world he wishes to call into manifestation is deeply embedded and intertwined with the one in which we find ourselves. If SM’s pieces were primal, these go one step further, reaching for and connecting with the primordially ordained transmission lines carrying the power buried deep within the soil and rock. This music isn’t just meant to be heard – it’s also meant to be felt. And then, after feeling it deep within, one must let it stir the soul into acting upon its subtle emanations.
