Nubiferous - российский музыкант из Пятигорска пишущий музыку в достаточно необычном для неподготовленного слушателя жанре. Его можно охарактеризовать как что-то среднее между dark ambient и ritual ambient, однако ценителям поджанров он точно придется по вкусу. Активно используя полевые записи (пение птиц, шорохи, шум воды и пр.) Nubiferous вырисовывает красоту природы, запечатленную в отдельных звуках, а с помощью этнических перкуссионных и духовых инструментов отправляет сознание к далёким предкам. Альбом "Мана" был записан в 2011-м году, но релиз состоялся только в 2014-м, хорошо законсервированный материал успел настояться, прежде чем попал к слушателю. Что же собой представляет "Мана"? Само слово "мана" обозначает сверхъестественную силу, которой могут обладать люди, животные и даже духи. Магическая картина разворачивается перед нами, не правда ли? Содержание действительно оправдывает своё название и с первых же звуков можно попасть в те места о которых, возможно, приходилось грезить во сне, но в которых точно не бывал ни один человек. В этом таинственном мире скрытом от человеческого глаза, природа живет в соответствии со своими законами, открывая портал в другое измерение, населенное архаическими существами, давно ставшими для человека мифологией. Путешествие начинается у прозрачного горного ручья, чьё журчание быстро сменяется гулом бурной и беспощадной реки населенной земноводными, отдалённо напоминающими жаб. Природная полифония сопровождается одной и той же мелодией флейты, создавая впечатление, что сам Перун с её помощью разговаривает с этими местами. Звон убаюкивающих колокольчиков дополняется ритмичной перкуссией, со временем незаметно утихающей и постепенно вводящей слушателя в медитативное состояние. Недолгая тишина сменяется треском цикад, уступая дорогу волнообразному дроуну и пробуждая ото сна лесных духов... мы снова слышим пленяющие разум звуки издаваемые флейтой: в этот самый момент все существа, как проявленные материально, так и не имеющие материальной формы наделяются силой и закручиваются в вихре четырёх стихий. Композиционное полотно очень насыщенно и местами циклично: одни и те же инструменты и приёмы будут встречаться почти во всех композициях, попеременно отдавая главенствующую роль чему-то одному. I remember as if it was yesterday, when a few years ago I received an album titled “Svietacjam” by Pragnavit from Belarus. I didn’t know of the project’s music in advance and the album had to wait its turn, so when I finally and halfheartedly threw it into the player, I didn’t expect any miracles. And guess what, I experienced catharsis, of the purest form, one that in my musical life has happened maybe a couple of times. It was so unexpected that something as inconspicuous would overwhelm me so greatly. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the most metaphysical fragments of Tarkovsky’s films, eerie pagan stories like “Viy” by Gogol, and all in the spirit of glorifying the power of the Slavic nature. I admit that I secretly hoped that with “Mana” by Nubiferous – also a new project for me – I’d experience a similar rapture, at least in some tiny amount. None of these things, but it’s still a good album.
Perhaps my impression is due to the fact that for Pragnavit it was the first album in nine years, possily the only really ‘serious’ material of the project, while for Nubiferous the releases seem like coming out of an assembly line. The artist is very prolific. Or maybe because Pragnavit had a more illustrative character, which speaks to me more than the ritual trance generated by the author of “Mana”. But let’s take a look at this release.
“Mana” contains seven long compositions, where the important role is played by field recordings and live instruments, while synths also play a part. “Temple Of The Sun”, the second track – it’s worth noting how beautifully the atmospheric passage enters into a mantra-like, pounding rhythm. This is the first highlight of “Mana”. Also, “Edge Of Summer” pops out as an interesting combination of underwater-sounding electronics and chirping crickets. Overall, the sounds of nature, the singing of birds, the rustling wind, etc. It all injects a large dose of authenticity into the music: we don’t listen to fairy tales about the old forest where pagan ceremonies are held. We’re actually there.
Compositionally this work is characterized by minimalism. Instead of attacking the listener with successive special effects, the artist places the emphasis on slowly dragging them into a world he has created. The slow, monotonous melodies, long passages, carpets woven with field recordings… all this can be enjoyed, especially since “Mana” is characterized by clean and transparent sound. Another strong point of the album is the longest “Valun”, a very dense and intense piece.
“Mana” is a textbook example of genuine ambient decency. Using basically simple, not too elaborate measures and at the same time giving the maximum effect. Try to look for it. The album is jointly released by Post Tenebras Musica, Vegvisir Music and Le Crépuscule du Soir in a 4-panel A5 Digifile, limited to 499 copies.

Genre/Influences: Ritual, dark-ambient, soundtrack.
Content: Inspired by ‘nature mysticism’, Nubiferous for sure is a familiar project for all lovers of ritual music experiences. The Russian project is already active since 1999 and can look back on an impressive discography.
Their newest work has been released as a collaboration by two Russian labels (Post Tenebras Musica and :Vegivsir Music) and a French label (Le Crépuscule du Soir). The result is worthy of examination featuring a DVD digipak format limited to 499 copies.
Elements of nature –probably resulting from field recordings, are noticeable elements on this work and takes off with aquatic sounds on “Clandestine.” The track rapidly evolves into a dark mysterious and definitely ritual style. There’s a great progression in sound and structure running through this piece, which is mainly animated by a chilling flute. The ritual character always comes back and directly reaches a climax at “Temple Of The Sun.” The cadence is pretty tribal like while ritual influences created by bells and freaky flutes bring this composition into frightful place.
“Mana” is filled with disturbing sound passages, which seem to invite the listeners to join imaginary nightmarish images. “Edge Of Summer” has a very strong visual appeal in the genre. The title track sounds more like conceived for a soundtrack and it reminds me a bit of the chilling passages running through the Mel Gibson movie “Apocalypto”. There’s a strong call from the forest(s) emerging from this song, which mainly comes through in field recordings of birds. Together with the dark creation of the music they seem to announce a nearby disaster… like an apocalypse.
The last tracks remain pretty dark and ritual-like. Metallic loops run through “Valun”, which also reveals great repetitive sequences. The last cut “1401” is an interesting one for its sound manipulations, but it’s maybe a bit too long and repetitive.
Conclusion: “Mana” is a poignant ritual exposure by a confirmed and talented band in the genre.
